Top 5 Best Supernatural Horror Movies of all times

By   /   December 13, 2011  /   No Comments

This weekend I took some time off my work, and relaxed a bit. Being a horror movie buff, I love watching the latest, and good, horror movies (after going through its review in IMDB). And this weekend, I was lucky to watch this movie called – Grave Encounters. And that is the reason, why I am creating this list of the best Supernatural Horror Movies of all time.

Classic Horror Movies: Best Ingredients

I love classic horror – scary stories told in an old fashioned way – without any gore, skin show or unnecessary special effects. Such movies often have a very interesting story line, and story telling, that makes you actually feel the horror, and fear. Plus, they will also make you jump out of your seat. In simple words, these movies scare the shit out of you, and stay with you for long.

My Horror Movies List – What it doesn’t include?

If you are expecting movies having a lot of gore, blood, mutants, violence and skin show (for example, movies like Halloween, Scream, Friday the 13th, Dawn of the Dead, Hills have eyes, Shaun of the Dead) - then this list is not for you. I am not saying that these movies are bad, as some of them are very good. But, they don’t qualify as actual horror movies, they are thrillers.

Top 5 Best Supernatural Horror Movies of all times

The following is the list of the best Supernatural Horror Movies of all times (you can also check out the trailers):

1. Exorcist

When a teenage girl is possessed by a demon, two priests make the use of exorcism to save that girl.

Why watch it? This is, unarguably, the best horror movie of all times. It was released in 1973, but it still carries the power to scare its first time watcher. What makes this movie a classic is its brilliant cinematography, in-depth story line, classic old style story telling, no use of computer graphics, and great acting. So, if you still haven’t watched this one, go for it now.

2. Insidious

A family tries to stop evil from trapping their son in a realm called The Further.

Why watch it? This movie is filled with so many scary (some cliched) moments that will make you guys jump out of your seats. But, that’s not the only thing about this movie. It depends greatly on character development, and a great script to hold it together. Though, its pre-climax is a bit haywire, but still the overall movie is amazing. Its fast paced, very scary, and also has humor. Plus, it justifies its tagline – Its not the house that’s haunted. Go for it now.

3. The Blair Witch Project

Three friends travel to Maryland to make a “student documentary” about a local urban legend.

Why watch it? This is a classic cult horror movie, which is not just scary and interesting, but has also given a great gift to film making – use of handheld cameras. And, if you think Paranormal Activity was innovative and scary, man you must see this movie. This movie didn’t need any special effects, or any fancy ghost scene, to scare the shit out of the viewers. It was so scary. The director purposely keeps the audience in the unknown, so that one can visualize their own conclusions and fears. And, it succeeds in doing that. A MUST WATCH.

4. Grave Encounters

Crew of a ghost-hunting T.V. show, is shooting inside an abandoned Psychiatric Hospital, where unexplained paranormal activities has been reported for years.

Why watch it ? As I have told you before, I have watched this movie yesterday. And, it scared the shit out of me completely. 5 minutes into the movie, I thought it was going to be like “The Blair Witch”. But, the similarity ended right there. This movie is somehow a mixture of Blair witch, Paranormal Activity and Session 9. But, its amazing (fast paced) story telling, and plenty of scary moments, makes it one of the best horror movies of all times. It not just holds you interest from start to end, but keeps on scaring you. Must watch.

5. Session 9

Tensions rise between a cleaning crew, when they start working in an abandoned mental hospital with a horrific past.

Why watch it? Now, I was thinking of including “The Ring” instead of this movie. But, I still went ahead with it. The reason for it is the scary atmosphere that this movie is able to create – abandoned mental hospital, its past coming alive, scary audio recordings. And that makes it genuinely scaring, and interesting. Like the Blair witch, this movie moves slowly, and the director plays with your mind by letting you imagine things – instead of going for the CGI effects. Plus, there is an shocking twist in the tale. A MUST WATCH.

P.S. Watch Session 9, if you are a true lover of this genre. Else, you may find it a bit boring. In that case, you can go for “The Ring”.

I hope you liked the above list of Supernatural Horror Movies. If you have something to add to it, feel free to share.
