I firmly believe that every small webmaster must do the SEO of his own website. Giving the SEO task for your small website, to an another company, would be a terrible waste of time.

Unless you have time constraints, you must go for the SEO of your own website. After all, you know your website better than anyone else. Plus, only basic SEO of your website is sufficient, in order to ensure its higher rankings on SERP (Search Engine Results Page).

Why should one know these SEO terms ?

You can easily find a lot of simple and effective tutorials of SEO online. But, as SEO is a highly technical concept, most of the tutorials would be using a lot of technical words. And it becomes very important to know the meaning of these terms in order to better understand Search Engine Optimization.

1. SEO/SEM:

A lot of people think that both these words – “SEO” and “SEM” – are synonyms. But that is not exactly the case.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving or optimizing the content of a website, in order to improve its ranking in Search Engines. On the other hand, Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is generally concerned with promoting your websites, by improving their visibility on Search Engines, through the use of paid ways – such as Google Adwords, paid inclusions and PPC.

2. Backlinks:

Back links is not just a term, which you should know, but also is a very important concept to improve your overall SEO rankings. So, it becomes really very important for you to know the meaning of Back links.

A Back link is referred to as a link on other website, which points to your website. It can be a text, flash file, picture, image or even video, on other website, which links to your website.

The more backlinks your website have, the better it will rank in the SERP’s (Search Engine Results Page). And thus, your website will get a lot of free traffic on it.

3. SERP (Search Engine Results Page):

SERP is referred to as Search Engine Results Page. It is a very important SEO term, which you must know, as a lot of SEO tutorials and experts make the use of this term.

SERP is a listing of web pages returned, when you search something on Google or other Search Engines. The main aim of every SEO campaign is to improve the position of your website, among other similar websites listed in the SERPs, to achieve the ultimate goal of bringing massive free traffic on it.

4. Keywords:

Understanding the concept of “keywords” is very essential for an effective SEO. Keywords can be considered as the backbone of Search Engine Optimization.

Keywords, also referred to as Keyword Phrase, is the word(s) that a user type in Google’s search box to search something. Search Engines returns the web pages, which they believe are most relevant for those keywords.

5. Page Rank:
